NKLA

One important aspect of my blog-a-thon is to raise awareness for the programs that Best Friends Animal Society is trying to share across the country (and really, around the world!). There are many different campaigns and events that help spread this awareness which ultimately tells the nation what Best Friends is all about, but for now I will be focusing on one recent addition to the Best Friends Animal Society-Los Angeles programs roster, NKLA.

NKLA stands for "No Kill Los Angeles" and, succinctly, NKLA is a coalition of different animal welfare organizations and groups that have made a commitment to band together along side Best Friends Animal Society to eliminate the homeless pet problem in Los Angeles.

I know, this seems like an incredibly daunting task and you might wonder how this is going to be done? It is simple. Best Friends along with their coalition partners are offering low cost (and sometimes free!) spay/neuter services as well as find more homes for adoptable animals in need via fostering or actual adoptions. When you combine these two efforts, great change can finally occur, but it takes help from the community to make this happen!

In 2011 alone more than 56,000 animals were brought into city shelters throughout Los Angeles. Out of these 56,000, approximately 17,000 were euthanized as there was no longer any room for them, they were there for too long, or one of many other reasons. It is MY hope as an animal lover that this number goes all the way down to 0 and there is a time when homeless pets are a thing of the past. It can be, we just need more people to realize the full extent of the homeless pet problem and from there we can continue to make sturdy strides toward this goal.

  1. God I love this campaign. It was really, really noticeable (and adorable!) when we were there even as travellers, and I've got my fingers and toes crossed that they start to see a hugely positive effect from it not only for the LA rabbits and cats and dogs, etc. that won't be put down, but that it will take off around the world, too!
